Kalaripayattu Maestros :
Kerala martial art has a rich story to tell. Its origin is related with Thalassery. It is believed that this ancient art is governed by guardian Goddess, Kalaru Paradevatha and it practiced by large numbers. It is a cultural legacy of the Kannur people; Kalaripayattu is performed by Kannur people in large number as they think it as s symbol of pride.

Vibrant Folk Dances :
The vibrant folk dances of Kannur have a correlation with the caste system of the society as the oppressed used it as a medium to express their voice.  Folk dances are accompanied by legendry folklores. An important part of social life, the folk dances is performed at their festivals, mostly at the temple festivals. The popular folk dance of Kannur are Adiyans, Vishanthi”, Thiyyatom, Ucchavali, Godamuri, etc. These dance forms are performed as dance of devil, human sacrifice, mock fighting, etc. Music and dance are the souls of the folk dance. Performers wear masks and paint their faces to resemble the characters.

Kannur’s Very Own Theyyam :
Theyyam is the primitive art form of Kerala which has roots in Kannur. The performers of the dance are dressed up in colorful clothing, head dress and body painting. This art is performed at the temple in the months between December and April. A total of 350 types of Theyyam are performed in the temples of Malabar region of Kerala, the most significant one Parassinikadavu temple performance.

Culture :
Kannur residents have a diverse cultural life beautified by their art forms performance, social rituals and customs. Kannur Culture is assimilation of different cultures being influenced by the Jain and Buddhist impacts.
