Kasargod Art and Culture

Buffalo Race :
Buffalo Race found only in Kasargod district of Kerala and some parts of Dekshina Canara district is closely related with the agrarian life of the farmers. It symbolizes the sowing and harvesting of the farmers. Buffalo race is held at the fields where bulls and buffalos take part in the race. Huge crowd is seen during the race. Villagers gather here, they shout in joy. This race sport is popular in the northern parts of Kasargod district, especially in Kumbala and Manjeswar. Animals are decorated colorfully; riders also dress up in colorful wears. It is a part of cultural heritage of Tulunad.

Buffalo Race

Cock-fight :
In the folk songs of Malabar, reference of the cock fight is found. It is a part of temple festivals. Cock fight is conducted by the villagers secretly in some regions as it is legally banned now.  Women cannot watch this spot due to social stigma.

Yakshagana :
Yakshagana is a musical dance drama; it is one of the important folk arts of Kasargod district. It is also performed in certain areas of Karnataka state. This dance drama is also seen in Terukkuthu in Tamilnadu, Koodiyatam and Chakyarkuttu in Kerala, Veedhinataka in Andhra Pradesh, etc.

The performers dance according to the epical tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavatha and from other Hindu mythological episodes. They play the role of Gods, demons and sages. Kasargod is home veteran Yakshagana performers and the locals still perform this musical dance drama.
