The oldest river fiesta in Kerala, Aaranmula Boat Race is celebrated during the Onam festival which falls in the months of August and September. This festival is a part of the Aaranmula Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and Arjuna. Aaranmula is about 128 kms away from Trivandrum city of Kerala. Huge crowds are seen on the bank of River Pamba to watch this great boat carnival.

The roaring of the snake boats create a unique rhythm in tune with the boat songs. In 1972 this snake boat race became a part of the temple festival of Aaranmula. The oarsmen dress with traditional attires like mundu and turbans and sing boat songs. The boats are adorned with silk and gold spangled umbrellas.
The snake boats are usually 100 feet long. The local craftsmen build these boats in the shape of a hood of snake. The boat carnival is an aesthetic view to watch from the bank of the River.
