Attukal Bhagavathy Temple of Trivandrum celebrates the Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam which is the main festival of the temple. The ten-day festival begins on the Karthika star of the Malayalam month of Makaram-Kumbham. It falls in the English months of February-March. This festival closes with a sacrificial offering called Kuruthitharpanam. The famous Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam is celebrated on the ninth day of the festival.

Devi Attukalamma is said to the incarnation of Kannaki, the protagonist of
Silappathikaram written by Tamil Poet Illango in the 2nd century A.D. People have a belief that Kannaki takes rest at Attukal, one of the places where she takes rest on her journey from northward to Kodungallur.
