Easter is one of the most significant festivals of Christians which symbolizes the resurrection of Christ. The Christian scripture says, on the third day from the day of his crucifixion Jesus Christ was resurrected from his death. The Christians celebrate this restoring life of Jesus on the Easter Day two days after Good Friday. The celebration of Easter festival usually falls in between 22nd March and 25th April.
Easter is a holy week and there are both preparatory and festive season related with it. The periods divided in connection with Easter celebration in Kerala are
- Lent, the forty preparatory penitential days
- Holy Week including the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday
- The Octave of Easter (classical time for Baptism)
- The paschal season or Easter time extending over forty more days
The Holy Thursday is marked by the Lord's Supper. There are some rites performed at the Christian families. On the day of Good Friday churches remain closed and it is a day of grief. Holy Saturday is a day mourning and wailing. On the Easter Sunday the churches are ready to observe Easter Vigil by ten at night. Consecrated candle is lit in the Church. Religious hymn fills the air. Easter is more a spiritual festival than social. Grand dinner is arranged at home and people visit friends and relatives.
