Islands of Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is an archipelago of 36 islands, only 10 islands are inhabited. The main islands are  :

Islands of Lakshadweep

Kavaratti :
Kavaratti is the administrative headquarter of Lakshadweep and the most developed island of Lakshadweep. This island houses a total of 52 mosques and the most beautiful among them is Ujra mosque.

Water sports are the main attraction to the tourists, yet leisure buffs can swim and sun bask at the sandy beaches. Marine museum has a good collection of specimen and diverse marine life is exhibited at the Marine Aquarium.

Kalpeni :
Kalpeni Island houses the largest lagoon among Lakshadweep Island. It is the hub for various water sports. Along the eastern and southeastern coastline of this coral island, huge bank of coral debris is found. The people of this island only allow girls to go to school. Kalpeni has some small islets such as Tilakkam, Pitti and the uninhabited Cheriyam with sparkling lagoon which are known for its scenic beauty. One can engage in water sports and can hire Koomel, Kayaks, Sailboats, and Pedal Boats for fun and thrill of water games. Tourist cottages are here for accommodation of the tourists. This island is visited as an itinerary of Coral Reef package.

Minicoy :
Minicoy is southern most island of the group and it is geographically isolated from other islands. The culture of the people is a fusion of Maldivian and South Indian. People speak here Mahl, a form of Divehi, the language spoken in Maldives.

Women have a significant position in the society, so this island is known as the women’s island. There are 10 villages in this island and each village is presided by Bodukaka. The people have a rich tradition of performing arts and the most attractive among them is the Lave dance which is performed on festive celebrations. Some recreation funs one can enjoy at this island are visit to the tuna canning factory, Light House, and drive through the coconut palms, etc. Majority of people earn their livelihood working in the shipping companies. The men folk is expert in carpentry and maritime skills and women are in culinary and housekeeping skills.

A resort located here offers good accommodation to the tourists. This island is included in both coral reef package and swaying palms package.

Kadmat :
The shoreline of Kadmat Island is ideal for romantic getaway as its beaches are nice for swimming and sunbathing. The west shallow lagoon is an ideal spot for water sports. This island has lagoons on its both sides. The vast stretches of coconut palms form an ideal canopy of shade.

A Water Sports Institute and Dive school is run by experts here. The most attractive tour packages are Dive Package tour and Marine Awareness package. International tourists gets permit only to visit this island along with Agatti and Bangaram. This is a paradise for honeymooners.

Agatti :
Agatti Island houses the only airport of Lakshadweep, so one can fly to this island from Kochi Airport of Kerala. A tourist resort is located here which offers cottage like accommodation and various other water sports facilities. The uninhabited islands of Bangaram-Thinnakara, Parali-I and Parali-II are just a jump away from this island.

Bangaram :
Scuba divers head towards this island of Lakshadweep. The exquisite coral formations and a variety of coral fishes make one’s dip into underwater fruitful. The diving School of Bangaram offers enough opportunities for water sports. One can reach this island easily by a speed boat from Agatti Island. The Bangaram Island provides accommodation to the tourist which has water sports equipment and the first Dive School of Lakshadweep.
